VFP 9 SP2 Help Fix: Glitches
As I noted last night, a new version of the VFP 9 SP2 Help file is available for download.
I have reviewed the new Help file and it does have a couple cosmetic issues, which in my opinion are minor compared to the advantage of including the 600+ missing index items. There is one unexpected minor improvement too, and I found a more serious problem, but it is not a show stopper in my opinion.
Cosmetic issues:
- Blue header section is white.
- Header section is rearranged a bit.
- Parameters are no longer bold.
- Microsoft copyright missing at the bottom (maybe this could be to our advantage. {evil grin}
- See Also sections with different References and Other Resources subsections are all merged under Concepts.
- Help title would be better as Visual FoxPro 9.0 SP2 instead of dv_foxhelp91.
- Code is more readable without extra white space.
The only serious problemI have found in my limited testing the Favorites are missing. I am not talking about my favorite topics (those always seem to get lost when updating CHM files), but the entire tab and feature is missing. I use this a lot and it will be a big hit my productivity. It won't stop me from using this version of the Help file.- Internal links are broken on a number of pages (thanks to Andrzej for pointing this out to me and posting an image on the Foxite Upload site), also not a show stopper.
- PEM links are broken on pages for all objects I have looked at. This is definitely a serious problem so you have a choice, missing PEMs (used all the time by some people), or missing index entries in original SP2 Help. Both have a common workaround, use the Search page.

Hi Rick,
A real problem reported by Sergey Berezniker at UT:

All links in the pages of the Object Properties, Methods, and Events are missing.

Yes, the PEMs is a serious problem.
- The bold parameters is not a cosmetic problem, it causes a usability problem, that is a bit serious
- The searh tab is just an editbox and a button! Where are the clickable columns in the results and all the other options in that tab?
In a telephone call with YAG, he mentioned to unblock the file with the method listed over at http://www.craigberntson.com/blog/2008/04/new-vfp-help-file-available.asp .
I don't have any unblock option. I think the download should be pulled, and totally reworked.

fdbozzo,
I agree with the issues of the search tab, it has to do with complex searching being turned on if I remember correctly.
As to the bold parameters: I agree with your point, but it is a cosmetic issue triggering a usability problem for you.
Rick
Bill,
The "unblock" issue is not specific to this CHM file, this is an issue associated with OS/IE security and any downloaded CHM file. If you look on Rick Strahl's blog he has pointed to several resources to solve this problem:
Rick Strahl's fix for downloaded CHMs
So the problem with the unblocking would happen whether this was a good help file (content, layout and functionality) or not.
